Facebook: The New Entertainment Hub?
By LenLenDrr
I've been doing some reading and discovered that there have been a little something more than rumors spreading about Facebook's next big thing. It seems as though they are going to be teaming up with about ten music streaming sites to create a simplified way for it's 750 million users to listen to and share their favorite movies, t.v. shows, and music. Perhaps this will be one change to Facebook that won't result in me seeing negative feedback on my friend's statuses. I'm quite stoked to hear about this change. It would be a relief to not have to hassle with Pandora, Slacker Radio, and last.fm. Simplified things just make life easier.
I rustled through the pages of the New York Times (figuratively, being as I just googled it.) and discovered some of the conjoining companies. They say that there are "10 or so music services that will be part of the service at its introduction". Included in these is Spotify, Rhapsody, Rdio, MOG, and Deezer. Apparently Spotify has over ten million customers, and I have never heard of them. Vevo, a music video site is joining in with this bunch. I am kind of excited about that. I wonder if they're going to let you stream music videos. It would be like having late night MTV all day whenever you want.
Anyhow, the only concern I see with this entire set up is, how are any of these companies going to make any money if the service is completely free? I'm sure that they are going to be like most applications on Facebook and charge a fee for extra capabilities. This being the usual things such as unlimited skips and no advertisements between songs. I just read though, that the record companies charge a small fee for every song listened to. So I'm wondering how that's going to work with hundreds of millions of people listening to music and only a couple hundred thousand offering to pay in order to skip a few extra songs. Whatever it is that they do, I hope it works out for them and all of the companies involved.
So I'm wondering, what innovative idea Facebook will come up with next. I saw the rise and fall of MySpace and was certain it would quickly happen to this social network. I was wrong. Somehow Facebook keeps staying strong and sticking with the times. Throw some comments my way, what do you think of this website that has more users than double the population of the United State's?
